For Bio “Waste” 2 Garden “Work”
From Garden 2 Kitchen, Plate 2 Soil

Imagined and created by Tove Jansson, the Moomins are a group of characters from Moominvalley, an idyllic place between the sea and the mountains. The Moomins live in harmony with, and according to the rhythms of nature as the seasons come and go, reminding us that we can too.

The Moomin characters have a special place in the minds of people of all ages. Recounting the experiences of the Moomins at home and abroad can guide us through the world we inhabit, and provide us with a moment of reflection in our lives to consider what a Moomin would think and do.

Although Jansson has passed, the rhythms of nature continue to ebb through Moominvalley today, and we suspect Moominmamma’s garden will be in full bloom again next Spring.

BioProffa is a brand based in SW Finland, in between fields of grass, cereal grains, and forrest (as are many other locations in Finland). Although not as adventurous as the Moomins, we would like to think we are doing something interesting and useful that (at least some of) the Moomin personalities could approve of.

“BioProffa” is a nod to not only the renegade biology professors of the past, but the countless others who observe nature’s patterns, and decide to share what they think and see, so that we can live in a more “biologically” sensible manner.

Most of our effort is in supplying products that support alternative, more “natural” systems of operation, most notably focused around observing, collecting, and upcycling resources – an example being collecting our bio “waste” and diverting it to life’s support network, the invisible microbes that drive soil regeneration.

WASTE2LIFE is the name of our Moomin product collection.

If you observe your garden, and nature more broadly, you may notice that matter and energy flow cyclically, from one to another. We can still be a part of that. So the ask is…

to observe,

to collect waste,

to feed microbes,

to regenerate,

to make soil,

to plant seed,

to give waste to life,

to bring life to waste.

Hopefully one of our products can help you integrate your kitchen to your garden, or at the very least, make your trips from your apartment to the sorting station a bit more Moominous.

At BioProffa we are weirdly into Bio ”Waste”, for it is hardly waste. It is a resource to collect and redirect, as the waste of one is the food of another. Microbes give our bio “waste” new form and function, a new direction and life, from soil to plant. Let them give life to waste, so that over time it can return to your plate once more.

Whether you are already passionately fermenting with Bokashi, being nudged by a family member to consider composting, or being coerced by your government to partake in collective waste sorting, here is a tool to make it easier, and hopefully make the formerly mundane a bit more... Moominous.

BIO COLLECTION BIN.

(noun)

1. A bin for daily bio "waste" collection.
2. The first step on a foreign banana peal's journey back to your soil.

(synonyms)

1. Countertop food waste bin
2. Compost caddy

The Bio Collection Bin is for everybody who eats. It helps you collect and recycle your kitchen scraps and coffee grounds, aka bio “waste,” with ease and style… and without the flies and odours. Simple, practical, and now even more beautiful, thanks to Moomin artwork.

Lid with Carbon Filters.

The perforated lid is equipped with two activated carbon filters that bind odours and block fruit-fly migrations. We usually prefer to feed ecosystems outside, not inside.

The contents can “breathe”, slowing down the anaerobic rot that may be counterproductive to your composting efforts.

Handles.

It is easy to move around from counter-top to table, kitchen to compost, home to cabin… and can hang out on a hook from its handle.

Inner-Bin.

Due to popular demand, all Moomin Bio Collection Bins come equipped with a dishwasher-safe “Inner-Bin,”  negating the need to hand-wash the steel bin in between emptying’s.

Emptying.

Depending on your personal style and municipal regulations, you can collect and empty with the inner bin, or neatly line it with a biodegradable bag. However, we do understand if you prefer to make a statement and go on a stroll with the Moomin bin itself.

The Products.

Having to decide amongst a plethora of colors and beautiful Moomin characters was a bit stressful. We hope we do not pass this experience on to you.

Options… Decisions.

We have designed 2 “collections” of Moomin Bio Collection Bins.

First, a limited* lot of four AW 24-25 4L bins in restrained colors that a Nordic can endure: “Storm,” “Sand,” “Fall Foliage,” and “Oat Berry.”

*Please do tell your neighbours it’s a limited edition bio collection bin, preferably with a serious face.

Second, our shiny stainless steel “Garden Life” series in consideration of  those who suffer from color-decision-paralysis, and end up opting for the safe monochrome option, like our in-house black hoody wearing bio collection bin designer, Otto.

Hopefully we can deliver one to your liking, and the Moominous bins can make the previously mundane task of sorting and collecting a bit more pleasant … and maybe inspire you to start building soil yourself.

Scroll down for a closer look at the designs, and if you have any questions or inquiries, do get in touch via the contact form at the bottom of the web-page. Kiitos.

Activated Carbon Filters.

Depending on use and personal preference, the lid’s activated carbon filters should be replaced every six months or so. To replace, pull the filters out from under the lid and dispose. Insert the round filter first, then the square one.

Replacement activated carbon filters are available at retailers and Eurogarden.fi via the button:

Steel Bin. To maintain the longevity of the vinyl decal images, please hand wash the outer bucket with cold water and a cloth. Do not wash in a dishwasher. Refrain from scrubbing with brushes, using strong (acidic/alkali) detergents, or leaving outside for long periods of time.

Inner-Bin. The inner-bin is dishwasher-safe and resistant to organic acids from organic matter break-down. We recommend using the inner bin and/or a bio waste bag to reduce potential corrosion to the metal bin.

“Peculiar Mind,” Fall Foliage,

“And there was Little My, slinking up the slope more like a movement than anything else, you could see so little of her. She was just a glimpse of something determined and independent that had no need to show itself.”

Moominpappa at Sea, 1965

"PECULIAR MIND." FALL FOLIAGE.

“Peculiar Mind” captures Mymble in a peaceful moment, contrasted with her fearless sister, Little My, who has a temperament suited to adventure—and, at times, a curious affinity for catastrophe, both big and small.
Designed in Finland.

“I knew nothing, but I believed a lot.”

Moominpappa
The Exploits of Moominpappa, 1950

"SIMPLE LIFE." STORM.

“Simple Life” portrays Momminpappa living just that. On the other side, Stinky, the morally questionable local villain who the Moomin’s take (a bit of) pride in being friends with, is having a quiet moment for a change, fishbones in hand.
Designed in Finland

“There’s no need to pretend that you are radiantly beautiful, because you are.”

Moomintroll
Moominsummer Madness, 1954

"FLOATING WITH YOU." OAT BERRY.

“Floating With You” portrays the ups and downs of Snorkmaiden and Moomintroll’s relationship. Moomintroll is an agreeable fellow, generally curious about everything he sees—especially the lively Snorkmaiden. They love spending time together... yet every so often, Snorkmaiden’s sudden change of heart can be rather mysterious—at least to Moomintroll.
Designed in Finland

“So they sat in a row on the beach, very close to one another, and Sniff sat in the middle because he thought it was safest.”

Finn Family Moomintroll, 1948

"BEACH DAY." SAND.

“Beach Day” displays the Moomins on a family outing, set against a subtly lighter (definitely not Finnish) “Sand” colored backdrop. Note that everyone goes swimming – as they should.
Designed in Finland.

As we revisit the different Moomin stories, we rediscover the fascinating array of aspirations and priorities that drive Moominvalley's unforgettable personalities.

For us, like many others, it is:

KIITOS

(THANK YOU) for collecting your bio “waste.” We hope the Moomin bins can accompany you on your soil-making journey.

The journey back to life begins here...

…but life is full of choices, even with a full Bio Collection Bin. Take it outside for a stroll to the bio collection or compost bin, or take the magical path of fermentation, by feeding your waste to microbes indoors with a Bokashi bin. Either way, we collect and redirect our waste..

2 GIVE WASTE 2 LIFE,
2 GIVE LIFE 2 WASTE.
